MBTA Copley Station

January 11, 2005 We received from the T a copy of their letter from the Federal Transit Administration that includes a "Finding Of No Significant Impact", as well as their Final Environmental Asessment. In their response to BGwT comments, the T commits to installing up to four new monitoring wells in the area to assess existing groundwater conditions. They will also have their contractor monitor at least ten existing wells in the area to completely assess existing conditions. They commit to installing additional wells "if needed". All wells will be turned over to the Trust after construction. They commit to consulting with the Trust on measures to be taken to protect existing timber pile foundations. They also plan to consult with the Trust about potential recharge. They do not address what may be causing low readings at the specific wells cited in the BGwT comment letter.
February 15, 2005 In our comment letter on proposed renovations at Copley Station, the Trust asked the T to investigate whether problems in their tunnels could be responsible for low readings at nearby wells on Boylston Street and Huntington Avenue near the tunnels heading away from the station. The T did not respond to those concerns in their environmental filings for the station. However, we raised them again during our meeting on the Silver Line. They have promised, but not yet delivered, additional data.
July 19, 2005 I received a response to my letter to the T from Dan Grabauskas, the new General Manager. He promised additional coordination with the Trust around groundwater issues at the station. I subsequently met with George Doherty, project manager, to go over the best sites for the four observation wells to be installed by the T, as well as other issues we had raised in our comment letters on the project. Mr. Grabauskas has also offered a meeting; we are trying to set a time.
