MassDOT

December 21, 2009 The new Massachusetts Department of Transportation has replaced the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and combined its work with that of almost all other state transportation entities. They convened the technical advisory committee of the City-State Groundwater Working Group to discuss potential recharge from some of the drains from the Central Artery that need to be redirected. There was agreement on priorities, and the department’s consultants will be developing some preliminary designs for the committee to discuss.
February 12, 2010 They are continuing with design work for modifications to the drainage system from the Central Artery. The decision on whether and where to introduce recharge awaits completion of some of BWSC’s repair projects and a determination of whether the recharge would be a benefit in the areas into which it can be introduced. Decisions should be made in the summer.

November 18, 2010 As part of a paving project in the Prudential tunnel on the Turnpike, MassDOT will clean a drain line servicing the tunnel. This will allow inspection of the drain line (which has not been cleaned out since the Turnpike extension was built in the 1960’s) to see if there are leaks there that could be contributing to low groundwater levels in the Back Bay and Bay Village near the Turnpike.

January 27, 2011 As part of a paving project in the Prudential tunnel on the Turnpike, MassDOT this summer will clean a drain line servicing the tunnel. This will allow inspection of the drain line (which has not been cleaned out since the Turnpike extension was built in the 1960’s) to see if there are leaks there that could be contributing to low groundwater levels in the Back Bay and Bay Village near the Turnpike. MassDOT continues to look at potential recharge applications for storm water from the Central Artery.

April 29, 2011 The cleaning and inspection of the drain line from the MassPike Prudential Tunnel, the first since it was installed almost 50 years ago, will start next month. This may lead to possible explanations for low spots along the Turnpike near Exeter Street in Back Bay and near Harrison Avenue in the South End.
May 26, 2011 MassDOT plans to begin the cleaning and inspection of the drain line serving the Prudential Tunnel of the Turnpike shortly. This will be the first cleanout of the drain line since the extension was built over 50 years ago. It may well reveal potential causes of low groundwater levels in several areas adjacent to the Turnpike and its ramps.

August 29, 2011 MassDOT’s contractors have begun the work of cleaning the Turnpike drain pipe from the Prudential Tunnel for the first time since it was constructed almost a half century ago. They hope to have a report within a few weeks of any leaks that may have been obscured by sediment that could be causing reductions in groundwater levels.

October 28, 2011 MassDOT has completed the cleaning of the Turnpike drain line from the Prudential Tunnel. They are awaiting results of a video inspection. As noted above, they plan to walk the drain line with the MBTA’s consultants, probably in November.

December 19, 2011 Rick McCullough of MassDOT personally inspected a long section of the drain pipe from the Prudential tunnel along with one of the MBTA’s consultants. They discovered three significant leaks in the pipe and MassDOT has committed to a rapid repair. It is very possible that these leaks influenced the low groundwater levels in sections of Bay Village near the Turnpike.
