Potential Research Projects

September 20, 2006 I met at Northeastern University with the Chair of their Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems and one of the other professors involved with the Center to discuss a potential project to develop technology to determine pile cut off elevations with less cost and disruption than is required to dig a test pit. They plan to do some preliminary investigation and get back with a proposal, if it seems feasible, to work with us on developing a system. If successful, this would allow us to better understand whether we should be aiming for different groundwater elevations in different neighborhoods. The technology would also allow property owners to more readily assess the level of concern they should have based on groundwater readings near their property.
January 18, 2007 Jim Lambrechts is developing a revised proposal for his proposed research project on an alternative method of repairing foundations in lighter buildings. Jim and I met with researchers from Northeastern and BU to discuss the use of acoustic technology to potentially determine cut off elevations and possibly even pile condition without the need for a test pit. I expect a proposal shortly.
February 15, 2007 We have received a proposal from Northeastern University for a project to determine pile cut off elevations and possibly pile conditions without digging test pits. We have also received a proposal from Jim Lambrechts of Wentworth to develop an alternative method of repairing the foundations of lighter buildings that might have particular application in East Boston.
